Soon after he was tossed overboard into the ocean in February, commercial sea urchin diver Scott Thompson was hit with some chilly realizations about survival, life and family.

Thompson was on a personal, overnight get-away cruise when, standing too close to the side of his 22-foot Anderson boat for an evening bathroom break, the craft lurched one way, then the other, causing him to trip and pitch forward on the deck.Thompson, a Ventura County resident, recounted his harrowing tale on a visit Wednesday, March 9, to the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro.

Off it went, traveling too quickly to catch as he quickly discovered when he tried valiantly to swim after it.Nothing was close, not the shoreline, not the nearest of the Channel Islands not the offshore oil derricks named Gil and Gina.“I’m looking around, treading water, and instantly my predicament sets in,” the 46-year-old father of three said. “I’m going to die.”

But it wasn’t work that brought him out on that night. Life’s cares were pressing down the way they often do — a friend who had died recently at a young age, a special-needs daughter was being treated for Koolen-de Vries syndrome, a developmental disorder. And there was the usual stress over work and bills.
