Louie Perez discusses a half century of making music with Los Lobos.

A core of multi-instrumentalists – David Hidalgo, Conrad Lozano, Louie Pérez and Cesar Rosas – found each other in East Los Angeles nearly a half century ago. There they’d play music at informal gatherings. By the early 1980s, the band was finding city stages, distinguishing itself with its Chicano rock ‘n roll.

Q: I think of you all as perpetually touring. How did you function early in the pandemic? Did you find more time to paint and write? But to answer your question directly, I went into decompression mode. I settled down. It was hard getting over the feeling I needed to leave and go somewhere. One night I got to sit down and have dinner with my wife. She said, “What are you doing? Waiting for the food to get cold?” It’s like I had to get used to being home again. But I loved it. At one point I did fear I’d have nothing to show for it. And then the fear became reality.

A: Yeah, obviously the Blasters came up when we talked about this recording. The Alvin siblings were kind enough to let us open for them. We owe them so much for that. We wanted the album to be testimony for the early rockers that were there before us. But we’ve also been around a while. We wanted some songs from the time we’ve been around. And we wanted some deep cuts.A: Yeah, there we wanted to do something that not everybody would expect.
