Documentos del Instituto de Inmunología de La Jolla y de la UCSD muestran formas innovadoras de fortalecer y hacer más eficaces los combatientes clave del sistema inmunológico.
Los linfocitos T, esas células de la sangre capaces de detectar y destruir desde virus hasta cáncer, han recibido mucho amor esta semana por parte de los investigadores de San Diego.
Al manipular esta maquinaria interna, los investigadores pudieron desencadenar la producción de una sustancia llamada coenzima Q, un antioxidante crucial para desbloquear las reservas de energía dentro de las células. La bióloga de células cancerosas Ana Rosa Sáez Ibáñez, asociada del Instituto de Investigación Oncológica, revisó el trabajo y dijo que promete desvelar “intervenciones farmacológicas y dietéticas que podrían aumentar la protección contra las infecciones y mejorar la eficacia de los tratamientos inmuno-oncológicos”.
Algunos tumores, sin embargo, son capaces de mantener características de “punto de control” en sus superficies que les permiten engañar a los cazadores CD8 para que se desconecten.
