As expected, the final on-track festivities leading up to the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series finale ended with Championship 4 contenders atop the speed charts at Phoenix Raceway.
In a battle between veterans and first-timers, those with experience ultimately came out on top when it mattered.
“Qualifying means a lot, don’t get me wrong,” Logano said. “It means a little bit less when you’re in the Championship 4, because at worst you’re the fourth-best stall, but is the best for sure. There’s also the effect of the clean air staying up front. It’s a good place to be.”Phoenix is a track where it's notoriously difficult to pass, so having the preferred position out front will be another huge advantage for the 2018 champion.
The two former champions were the only two final four contenders to qualify inside the top 10 after both Ross Chastain and Christopher Bell failed to advance into the final round of the time trial session. Bell has had the most difficult time in Phoenix since unloading his No. 20 Toyota Camry off the Gibbs Racing hauler. He wrapped practice as the slowest of the Championship 4 drivers, 0.312 seconds off the pace from Chastain's hot lap. Fortunately for him, they were able to find some speed in qualifying, albeit a small gain, to where they will roll off 17th for the series finale.
