Canada’s recall of Prime Energy comes just days after U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) called on federal regulators to investigate Prime Energy due to concerns about the drink’s health effects on youth.
Prime Energy drink, founded by social media influencers Logan Paul, a Westlake, Ohio, native, and KSI, has been recalled in Canada due to the beverages containing 200 milligrams of caffeine, exceeding the limit of 180 milligrams of caffeine per serving allowed by federal regulators. Health Canada said Wednesday the recall is due to Prime Energy containing 200 milligrams of caffeine per can, exceeding the limit of 180 milligrams per serving allowed by federal regulators. Prime Energy’s 200 mgs of caffeine per serving is equivalent to about six Coke cans or two-and-a-half Red Bull drinks.
“As a result, it should not be sold in Canada,” a Health Canada spokesperson said in an email on Tuesday, perDespite the recall, Health Canada said some stores throughout the country may be selling Prime Energy without approval to do so. “I think it’s disappointing, candidly,” Canadian Beverage Association President Krista Scaldwell said, according to CBC. “We want safety being a top priority.”
Health Canada also said caffeinated energy drinks are regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and that the two agencies would work together to address the issue, according to the
