SIBU: The number of people in the state cheated in loan scams continues to rise with 91 cases reported with losses amounting to RM767,171 from January to May 5 this year.
State Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah urged those who needed money to approach legitimate financial institutions instead of quick and easy loans advertised on social media.
The public should not be so easily deceived by loans offered on Facebook, websites or phone apps, he said. Supt Mustafa said those facing financial difficulties were especially vulnerable and must exercise caution or they risk being cheated by loan scam syndicates.“If a bank account is used by perpetrators of crime, the account holder could be charged in court if there’s sufficient evidence,” he said.
He said any queries or suspicion regarding loan scams could be forwarded to the police either through WhatsApp or SMS to the CCID Inforline at 013-2111 222. The public can also log on to http://ccid.rmp.gov.my/semakmule for information or advice concerning financial fraud.
