Commuters wade through a flooded street after a downpour in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on Sept. 20, 2021. , nestled between towering buildings and affluent neighborhoods, lie slum communities inhabited primarily by Christian families. These settlements, often forgotten by policymakers and ignored in city planning, are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the twin crises of climate change and environmental degradation.

The Christian community, already marginalized due to their faith, now faces an added layer of environmental neglect. Despite repeated requests to municipal authorities, there has been little effort to improve waste collection or provide proper sanitation services in these areas.

During the monsoon season, stagnant water and untreated waste combine to create hazardous conditions, especially for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. The health risks increase dramatically, with frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and dengue. Residents like John, a father of three living in another slum along the banks of Nullah in 66 Quarters, G-7/2, Islamabad, lament, “Our homes get flooded with water mixed with garbage every time it rains heavily. The smell becomes unbearable, and our children frequently fall sick.”

Initiatives such as solid waste management as a green business, capacity building and awareness programs, providing clean drinking water, installing solar-powered lights, and offering health services have been undertaken by local charities. However, these efforts are often limited by funding and resources.
