— General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep and Chrysler — for the first time in history, starting with three auto plants.
With negotiations for new contracts unsuccessful so far, the UAW launched strikes Friday morning at three plants in Michigan, Ohio and Missouri. The first strikes began Friday, just after midnight, at a Ford plant in Wayne, Mich., that produces Rangers and Broncos, a GM plant in Wentzville, Mo., that makes Chevy and GMC trucks and vans, and a Stellantis plant in Toledo that makes Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators.
In talks that are continuing, the union is asking for a pay raise of about 36 percent. Ford and GM are both proposing a 20 percent raise over four-and-a-half years. Stellantis was offering 17.5 percent raises over that same time period. President Biden spoke with Fain and with leaders from the automakers on Thursday evening, before the strike began. Fain and the UAW are planning a rally with Sen. Bernie Sanders , a longtime supporter of the union, Friday evening in Detroit.
