House Republicans today nominated Tom Emmer of Minnesota to be their candidate for speaker, but he dropped out just hours later when it became clear he could not secure the 217 votes needed to win the gavel in a House floor vote.
Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas lost on the first ballot, Jack Bergman of Michigan lost on the second and Austin Scott of Georgia was out on the third. Two candidates, Byron Donalds of Florida and Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, were eliminated in the fourth round. "Take someone like Newt Gingrich, put ’em in the position for three months, get the rest of the conference together, figure out who they’re willing to vote for, and then put a permanent speaker in place," Scott said.Rep.
Asked why the idea — which lacks key details, like how it would be enacted and whether it could even gain enough traction to happen — was being floated now, a GOP lawmaker replied: “We’re desperate.”
