Majority Republicans, in turmoil, unable to elect House speaker as McCarthy fails on sixth ballot

In this, the sixth round of voting over two long days, Republican Kevin McCarthy has abandoned his usual seat down near the well of the House chamber. Instead, he has relocated to the far corner of the floor, standing on the back rail and talking to one of his hardest-working supporters, Tom Emmer , who is slated to become majority whip.

Kat Cammack , who delivered this round’s nominating speech, has joined their huddle, along with Brian Fitzpatrick , a key moderate supporter. It’s essentially the GOP establishment corner, where moderates and longtime members hang out. The real negotiating is happening halfway across the chamber, as Patrick T. McHenry and Jim Jordan stand on the back center aisle talking to a handful of McCarthy’s biggest antagonists, in a conversation that is at times cordial and other times heated.
