A man was killed in a suspected illegal mining explosion in Bram Fischerville, Soweto on Thursday afternoon, the Johannesburg emergency medical services said.
This morning the premier said Egoli Gas, Sasol City Power, Joburg Water, Telkom and others had sent teams to the city centre to inspect their infrastructure.Joburg transport mayoral committee member Kenny Kunene has recounted the experience of a woman named Karabo. - Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said authorities suspected gas was involved but they didn't know the cause.
Meanwhile, CCTV footage of the blast has confirmed that the street had exploded and not imploded on Wednesday.MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko said of the patients she'd seen none had symptoms associated with inhaling gas - they had sustained physical injuries. Journalists on the scene have had to wear masks to protect their lungs from gas which hangs thick in the air.
