Little-Known Fact: Eye Drops Aren’t The Only Treatment To Lower Eye Pressure For Glaucoma

eye pressure, also known as intraocular pressure or IOP. Elevated IOP is a major risk factor for vision loss as it is associated with a higher risk of irreversible damage to your optic nerve, the nerve at the back of your eye that sends signals to your brain. This type of damage is linked to open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of glaucoma.

The standard of care for people living with open-angle glaucoma has been to treat high eye pressure with eye drops. When prescribed eye drops, you need to remember to place them in your eye every dayand follow your doctor’s instillation instructions. Research shows that not all patients who are prescribed eye drops use them as recommended. One small studyof 71 patients looking at eye drop instillation technique showed that only 28 percent of people were able to instill their drops correctly.
