Protesters chanted and screamed at NRA convention attendees outside the George R. Brown Convention Center Saturday — but their voices likely went unheard.HOUSTON — Three days after the Uvalde school shooting, the Avenida De Las Americas here embodied the national divide over guns.
Inside the center, you couldn’t hear the protesters. Cool air and bold advertising swathed attendees of all ages as they strolled the concourse and pondered whether to go to a seminar such as “Lessons Learned from Analyzing 35,000 Gunfights” or grab a swag bag and cruise the exhibit hall.Relentless branding came big and small. An image of an AR-15 with a magazine colored like the Texas flag displayed across the Constitution covered press credentials.
In the dim hall, with the smell of gun oil in the air, the obsession of NRA members was on display. Intricate displays dazzled onlookers who stared at rows of guns and merchandise. The guns rested on racks and tables when people weren’t holding them — feeling their weight, examining contours, testing actions, pointing them to the sky or floor and pulling triggers.
Many in our society have departed from the past when guns were more tool than fetish, political symbol or killing machines. But this is not an either-or issue. Why can’t we have a conversation about commonsense gun safety laws at the same time we work on these other issues? Beside the condolences and deflections, inside the Brown Center there was no real acknowledgment of the carnage that unfolded a few days before in Uvalde, 280 miles away, when a man killed 19 children and two teachers with an AR-15-type rifle. I didn’t come across any signs, memorials or fundraisers. I didn’t hear any conversations about the role the rifles played in the violence.
