The unlimited purchase of rice has caused only 11 Malay rice mills to survive out of 220 registered mills under the National Rice and Grain Board (LPN). Most Malay rice producers have failed to compete with larger producers who can buy rice at higher prices and in larger quantities. This situation has led to monopolization of rice purchases by large mills, determining whether to release or store rice stocks.
KUALA LUMPUR: Pembelian padi yang tiada had menyebabkan hanya 11 kilang padi Melayu masih bertahan daripada 220 kilang padi berdaftar di bawah Lembaga Padi Dan Beras Negara .
Bercakap kepada Utusan Malaysia, Setiausaha Persatuan Pengilang Beras Melayu Malaysia, Musonnef Md. Radzi berkata, kilang-kilang besar yang dikuasai individu bermodal besar membuat pembelian padi dalam kapasiti besar dengan harga mencecah RM2,250 bagi setiap tan metrik padi. “Sebab itu, hanya 11 kilang Melayu yang boleh bertahan, ramai yang terlepas pandang tetapi ini adalah isu besar sebenarnya yang dialami oleh kita di peringkat bawah,” katanya ketika dihubungi, semalam.
Mengulas lanjut, Musonnef berkata, sikap kementerian yang didakwa double standard menyebabkan masalah tersebut tidak diselesaikan sehingga hari ini, sekali gus menjadi bebanan kepada rakyat secara keseluruhan.
