Carol Liston O'Connor found herself losing strength in her body and falling over more frequently in 2022, and couldn’t understand why as she was young, fit and healthy
She had been experiencing slowly progressing symptoms, such as losing her strength and falling over more frequently.
“It’s mainly associated with men in their late 50s or 60s. Nobody speaks about a 41-year-old woman with it. I know from visiting the clinic in Beaumont, that there are a lot of young people with it.” “I cycled the Ring of Kerry in 2018. I was a strong fit woman, but when it all kicked off, it really affected my strength. I couldn’t lift my two-year-old twin boys off the floor. I had to be sitting on a seat and have them climb up.
“I went to the cinema on the Wednesday of that week and I had to hold onto the shoulder of my then nine-year-old daughter when I was coming down the stairs. I couldn’t do it unaided. “My doctor said, ‘Carol you’re dealing with a serious animal here’. My sister has multiple sclerosis and automatically asked, ‘Is it MS?’
“I know it’s a small minority of people who battle it and come out the other side - but who’s to say I can’t be one of them.”
