The long-standing Pixar Universe Theory has been a constant source of speculation for fans since its inception, yet the connection between Lightyear and Toy Story could make the concept more likely. Tracing its origins back to a 2013 thesis by John Negroni, the Pixar Theory has long informed discourse around the animation studio's output.

Although there are shared characteristics – most notably Buzz himself – the two projects take place in distinct realities. This is because Lightyear employs a "movie-within-a-movie" premise. As the film opens, a title crawl explains: "In 1995, a boy named Andy got a Buzz Lightyear toy for his birthday. It was from his favorite movie.
Beyond explaining awkward outliers that don't fit comfortably into the wider concept, like Onward and Luca, the movie in a movie premise helps clear up some outstanding issues with Negroni's original Pixar Theory. The 2013 idea posits that all Pixar films from Toy Story to Monsters University are all tied together through Boo, who traveled back through time to find Sulley, becoming the witch in Brave.
Other Pixar Movies Could Be Like Lightyear Although there are no other confirmed "movies-within-movies" in Pixar's back catalog, then there are plenty of potential candidates. At the time of publication, Negroni's original Pixar theory only included the studio's 14 feature film releases up until Monsters University.
Since 2013, Negroni himself has been fairly meticulous at updating the theory to account for projects like Coco and Soul. However, as Pixar's production line has continued to expand, it's understandable that some of the explanations for how it all fits together feel fairly thin. For instance, both Coco and Soul seem to offer wildly different interpretations of the afterlife. This is why Lightyear could be a blessing in disguise for Pixar Theory advocates.
