Heavy rainfall and flash flooding in Queensland is only expected to worsen with 500mm of rainfall expected to send roads and cars underwater in central and northern regions as the Treasurer speaks out.

The rainfall grew in severity on Sunday as the BoM reported 24-hour totals to 9am Monday the heaviest in Jubilee Point at 392mm, Peter Faust Dam at 372mm, Preston at 252mm, Proserpine Airport at 317mm and Preston and Bowen at 313mm.

Catchments across central and northern regions were also issued with minor and moderate flood warnings with a major alert in place for Georgina River and Eyre Creek. “As always, Australians are there for each other when these natural disasters hit and the Albanese Government will be there for people as well,” he said.

The Bruce Highway was shut in Mackay and surrounding areas including Bowen, Slaters Creek and near the Whitsundays as refuge centres emerged to give motorists a place to stay if flooding worsened.
