Porter County Public Library System Director Jesse Butz stood in the woods outside South Haven Public Library as he described what patrons can expect to see next year.
“This area is known to be kind of a swamp area,” he said, so the first job was to put a drainage system in place. “We wanted to design a garden based on the trees that are here,” Butz said. Plans for the installation of a library garden at the South Haven branch are shown on Friday, October 27, 2023. Work has already begun on the project.
In Valparaiso, “people are walking their dogs at 4 o’clock in the morning,” Butz said. The library garden is kept open with security cameras in place. Wi-Fi is in place, too, so students can do homework or commuters do work there. The library gardens are a boon to programs run by the library, Butz said. Inside, there’s a cap on the number of children who can participate in story hour and other programs. Outside, there’s plenty of room for additional participants.
