South Australian senator Kerrynne Liddle, the only Indigenous MP in the Liberals, has backed Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s contentious call to block the Voice to parliament.
She is a possible replacement for Julian Leeser as the Coalition’s Indigenous affairs spokesperson. She says the current proposal “gives Indigenous people a benefit above and beyond other Australians”.
“The irony is not lost on me when I’m sitting in the chamber and I hear that claim, when inside the chamber there are three Aboriginal women [including former Greens senator Lidia Thorpe and Country Liberal Party senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price], from different parties, who do not support it.” . But she said she would wait until the parliamentary inquiry into the referendum wording concluded before deciding how intensely she would campaign in the referendum. While Liddle said it was unlikely she would join an official No campaign, she said she would warn voters about risks associated with the Voice.
“The saddest part about this situation is the amount of people I talk to who say, ‘I won’t go public about my concern about this’,” Liddle said.
