Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the sense of Liberals managing the economy better than Labor has “always been rubbish”.

“I really want to change people’s perceptions about that … this surplus that we’re forecasting this year is an important demonstration of our spending restraint and our discipline,” Mr Chalmers told Sky News Australia.

“I see it as really the foundation of something else … if we get the budget in much better nick and we are doing that, then you can afford to help people doing it tough.”
