Singer-songwriter LianneLaHavas opens up about how her new album took shape, and shares the beauty rituals that have kept her grounded during quarantine.

But my album has kept me feeling excited,” La Havas tellsover a Zoom call from her London apartment.
The album focuses on overcoming hardship and “ultimately finding the positive enlightenment at the end,” La Havas says. Over the past five years, she’s experienced “a real journey of discovery of myself and my triggers and my strengths and weaknesses. This album allowed me to explore all of it in music form.” La Havas—who takes inspiration from the likes of India Arie, Jill Scott, and Lauryn Hill—notes that the making of the record had a certain free flow.
She was ready to release the album back in February. But with the rising pandemic, La Havas decided to wait a little bit longer. She’s realized it’s more of a “summer or spring album” anyway, with uplifting and renewed energy strung throughout—a much-needed soothing soundtrack in a stressful time of loss, racial tension, and self-isolation.
She takes a skin care-first approach to makeup, using rose water to tone and jojoba oil as a moisturizer for her hair, face, and body. “I think a natural face is so beautiful,” she says. “I like when you see the person’s real face.” Ahead of her album release, La Havas has been keeping busy: she recently put out a music video for her mesmerizing cover of Radiohead’s song. On July 15th, she did her first-ever live, virtual performance with the Round House, donating proceeds to the Black Lives Matter movement. “I’m just doing my thing. I hope to make another album as soon as possible as well,” she says.
