An investigation by Gamers Nexus reveals that certain LG and Dell monitors silently install promotional software through Windows Update without user consent, highlighting a broader issue of unwanted driver and utility installations.
Gamers Nexus, a well-known technology review channel, has issued a warning to consumers regarding certain LG monitors that clandestinely install unwanted software onto users' PCs without explicit consent.
The investigation, led by Steve Burke, focused on the LG UltraGear 34GX900A-B but found the behavior replicated across multiple models, including an older LG UltraFine 32UN880-B purchased three years prior. The process begins with Windows Update automatically installing LG extension and software component packages. Within approximately one minute, the OS Reliability Monitor logs an event from the "LG Monitor App Installer," indicating the installation of additional software, all occurring without user approval.
To test the persistence of this behavior, Gamers Nexus conducted 32 consecutive system reboots; 31 of those boots resulted in a promotional pop-up for McAfee security software, while one boot displayed an advertisement for LG's own monitor utilities. This silent installation mechanism is not isolated to the specific test unit, as other users reported identical issues with LG monitors dating back to 2024.
The problem extends beyond LG, as Dell and its Alienware monitor series have been caught employing a similar tactic. Through Windows Update, the Alienware Command Centre software is delivered whenever a compatible Alienware monitor is detected, a practice corroborated by The Verge's Tom Warren as early as 2024. For users seeking to disable this behavior, a Group Policy setting must be modified: navigate to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Device Installation -> Device Installation Restrictions.
Within these settings, users can prevent the installation of device drivers using Windows Update or block specific driver packages. However, it is unreasonable to expect average consumers to perform such advanced administrative maneuvers to maintain control over their own systems
