Thank goodness for men like Ben Ferencz, who passed away April 7 at 103 years old. After receiving orders to look into many concentration camps, he took it upon himself as a sergeant to secure German documents that accounted for the dead. Before starting his law career, he was asked to help Jewish groups obtain reparations and settlements from the new German government. He spent the rest of his life helping Jewish groups do this along with working as a professor of international law and campaigning for an international court that could prosecute the leaders of governments found to have committed war crimes.
Rep. Matt Sheehan, R-Plano, suggests that veterans belong in the classroom because they can “teach history and talk about the battles that they’ve been part of.” In my opinion, it’s just the latest stunt to avoid fixing public education. It also shows the abject ignorance and disdain held by many of our state representatives toward public education and teachers.
