— Marie Curie. Katherine Johnson. Sally Ride. Rosalind Franklin. All these incredible women are trailblazers in the world of science. However, why is it that I didn’t comprehend these figures’ significant impacts until I had started my own scientific studies? It is often hard for girls, especially now, to find role models in STEM fields outside of what one may experience in their education.

STEM builds character. By striving to create machines, write code or conduct experiments, girls can develop necessary critical thinking skills while simultaneously accomplishing something they will be proud of. The influence of STEM also acts as a tool of empowerment, opening doors and opportunities to experience the world around us and make it better.

How great to see the beautiful photo of the moon with the airplane in silhouette by photographer Tom Fox on the front page of the Feb. 17 Metro & Business section. And just above was the great story of the pair of eagles trying to build a nest in our inhospitable North Texas climate.
