Letters to the Editor
Readers respond to Abby McCloskey’s column on school vouchers; urge support of Proposition 9; don’t like politics at Sunday Catholic Mass; and clarify a Ronald Reagan statement.
Lastly, please vote for Proposition 9, which would give retired teachers a cost of living adjustment, which, by the way, was supposed to be included in last spring’s session.A recent email I received from the Catholic Diocese of Dallas on “School Choice Sunday” about “faithful citizenship” is insulting and dishonest. It is frightening that Bishop Edward Burns would bring the governor’s politics into our sacred spaces.
Texas families have had for years the freedom to choose from many school options. Parents have the choice for their child to apply to any private school. The only part of school choice that is accurate, however, is that the choice lies with the school. Many existing private schools have long wait lists.Public funds should remain in the public domain. Hopefully, our time in church can continue to focus on the message to “love one another” and not politics.
