Readers offer their opinions on permitting alcohol in Saskatoon parks and how the RCMP polices small communities in Saskatchewan.

This park is beside an elementary school, preschool, daycare and contains a busy playground. It is one block away from Luther Tower with many elderly women strolling by with their walkers on nice days.

It’s often used for picnics, weddings and family photo shoots. And people walk through it daily on their way to and from work at the nearby university and hospitals. This made me wonder what will happen if the city allows free-flowing alcohol in areas with no toilets. What about the potential for harm with those driving after a few drinks in a 30-km/h zone? I believe that it will increase the need for already strained police services.to approve this ill-informed activity.Where has the idea of community policing gone in rural Saskatchewan? Small villages, with less than 150 souls, like mine pay close to $10,000 per year for the RCMP services.

Even so, there is a desperate lack of a community-oriented approach by that historically venerated force. So I suggest having RCMP cruisers patrol at least times a week to ensure the serious impression is made that people should be careful if they are thinking of doing harm or committing a crime. Those three times a week patrols would cost $64.10 per trip, based on the $10,000 a year in village funding, but it would still not restore a true community policing presence.
