A reader suggests changing the math content of the STAAR test and give teachers the time needed to teach.Having worked for Educational Testing Service in 2005, I was on math teams that created high school standardized testing for various states, including the old high school TAAS test.
To make the tests, teacher teams were formed in the various subjects at the state level. They chose standards and sent them to us. Then we sent the standards to item writers who submitted math problems to us, and we determined if they matched the standard. If they were close, we made the necessary adjustments. This brings me to what I think is the problem.
Gov. Greg Abbott and other politicians have zero knowledge. Until they can pass an algebra competency test and spend some time teaching, they should stay away. STAAR is probably a regurgitated version of TAAS and TEKS. Instead of zapping the STAAR test completely, perhaps give teachers the time needed to teach.
Our students continue to score at the lowest levels in math. Cut out the bureaucratic nonsense and let teachers do what they are paid to do.
