'In our province, library funding has remained stagnant'

None of this would be possible without the continued individual donations, funding partnerships, an annual community grant from the city and the very vital seasonal used-book sales organized by the Friends of the Library, which alone bring in significant funds to support what we do. Libraries are vital social infrastructure like no other and more and more are understood as social determinants of the health of our communities. An Australian campaign, Libraries for Health and Well-Being, lobbying for increased support to meet the rising need for library services in Victoria puts it simply: Libraries Change Lives.

A 2023 UK study, Libraries for Living and for Living Better, looked not only at the significant economic impact of library investment but at the three themes of digital inclusion, health, well-being and independent living, and children’s literacy and associated outcomes. The research on In Newfoundland and Labrador, libraries fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Education and, amid budget constraints, libraries are not a priority.
