In a recent NBC News article, Ferry was quoted as saying, “Are we willing to accept the lake is not going to be productive….?” In November, at the Salt Lake County Watershed Symposium, in a panel discussion regarding ways forward to save the lake, Ferry focused on “market solutions.” I was not the only one with a look of shock on my face in that packed room.

The inconvenient truth is that what’s best for ecosystem health will likely not be best for the bottom line of the businesses that profit from Great Salt Lake at this late stage. Just ask US Magnesium. It is imperative that as a society, as a state, we understand and fully integrate the fact that a healthy ecosystem is the foundation of all prosperity for nonhuman and human life. There are no exceptions to this rule of nature. Evidence derived from science should direct solutions to Great Salt Lake mitigation, not financial gain. It is disheartening that the head of the Department of Natural Resources seems unwilling to accept these ecological facts.
