Backbencher wants details of the 128 companies who already hold APs and asks if they are Umno people or cronies.ap import
KUALA LUMPUR: A backbencher has called for changes to the Open AP policy so that more Bumiputeras can benefit from the car import business, and not merely a certain group of rich Bumiputeras.“There are 128 AP companies and another 36 new companies. Who are the owners of the 128 companies,” he said at the Dewan Rakyat.
He questioned if the 128 companies belonged to Umno politicians and their cronies and wanted to know why these companies qualified to hold APs. Lim suggested that some of the APs held by the 128 companies be given to eligible Malay youth or to foundations which could benefit B40 Malays. Approved Permits are issued by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and come in the form of Franchise APs issued free to franchise holders of car brands, and Open APs issued at RM10,000 each for parallel imports of cars of any brand.
Last week, the International Trade and Industry Ministry confirmed that 36 new Bumiputera companies had qualified as AP holders under a new Open AP policy, with stringent conditions, such as 100% Bumiputera-ownership, paid-up capital of at least RM1 million, and at least two years’ experience in selling and distributing vehicles.
