Pahler was one of three key speakers at Transparency International Malaysia’s forum titled “2019 Political Funding in Malaysia: The European Experience”, held at a hotel here. All three countries maintain a high standard of transparency by ensuring political parties are legally required to disclose large donations.

In February this year, the Election Reforms Committee recommended that the Malaysian government allocate funding to the country’s political parties so as to equalise the playing field.Political parties of a certain size are provided with funds and subsidies that are based on either the number of parliamentary seats held or the size of the party’s membership.

To further safeguard their political systems, the media of these countries play an active role by keeping an eye out for any suspicious discrepancy in a political party’s accounts.Mossenlechner said while the system worked for her country, it was not entirely perfect and her government was constantly evaluating it and looking for ways to improve.
