Is the Maestro backlash deserved?

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Leonard Bernstein’s children responded to the backlash against Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. Cooper returns to directing for the first time in five years with Maestro, a Bernstein biopic in which Cooper also stars. The first teaser trailer for Maestro was released this week, showing more of Cooper as the composer and his romantic relationships. Maestro will hit select theaters in November before dropping on Netflix on December 20.

Bernstein’s real-life children reflect on the recent controversy surrounding Maestro. In a statement on their Instagram page @leonardbersteinofficial, Jamie, Alexander, and Nina Berstein explained that they were consulted regularly throughout the making of Maestro. Of the controversy, they wrote that any backlash “around this issue strike us above all as disingenuous attempts to bring a successful person down a notch -- a practice we observed all too often perpetrated on our own father.

The family also assured critics that their famous father would have approved of Maestro. As for the physical representation of Bernstein, they justified that “It happens to be true that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose.” The siblings praised Cooper’s work on the biopic and claimed the actor-director brought tremendous “respect” and “love” for Bernstein on the set.

The Maestro Controversy Explained Maestro’s controversy is principally surrounding the use of prosthetics in the film. In order to accurately depict Bernstein, Cooper is seen wearing a fake, large, nose in the Maestro trailer. While Bernstein was Jewish, Cooper himself is not Jewish. Thus, some commentators felt that the movie was promoting a stereotyped and offensive version of what a Jewish man looks like.

Viewers took to social media to speak out against Maestro’s makeup choice. While some commentators seemed to be okay with a non-Jewish actor playing Bernstein, others took issue with what seemed like the biopic’s attempt to make “a non-Jewish actor look more like a Jewish stereotype.” Another user noted the apparent irony that Cooper did not use prosthetics to star in The Elephant Man, playing the protagonist who has a facial disfigurement.
