His photos of beachgoers in Bangladesh won the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Award.
A 2022 photo taken by Bangladesh-born photojournalist Ismail Ferdous of a couple and fishermen at Cox's Bazar, a popular beach nestled on the Bay of Bengal.
For this series, he won the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Award in October 2023 in Wetzlar, Germany. His win was announced at the annual Celebration of Photography event staged by premium German camera brand Leica. At Wetzlar, Ferdous described his creative journey: “After living in the United States for a number of years and returning to Cox’s Bazar, I see my own memories reflected in the beachgoers collecting shells and making sand sculptures, or viewing newlyweds on the shore.
At the same event in Germany, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award Newcomer 2023 went to Chinese photographer Ziyi Le, 30. Feelings of emptiness and self-doubt were the starting point for his portrait series. “Throughout my growing-up years, I spent little time with my parents,” he said. “We communicated little and were estranged for a long time, which made me feel like I was in the middle of nowhere. Every time I was confronted with family issues, I instinctively wanted to avoid them.”
He decided to explore the alienation he was increasingly feeling, and put out an appeal on Weibo. More than 40 young people responded, so Le set to work with his camera. He won €10,000 and a Leica Q3 camera for the award.
