The decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa to grant former president Jacob Zuma remission of his sentence for contempt of court is being debated in the Electoral Court. The court is hearing arguments from the uMkhonto we Sizwe Party (MKP) who claim that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) acted with bias in barring Zuma from contesting elections as a candidate for MKP.

President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to grant former president Jacob Zuma remission of his 15-month sentence for contempt of court was at the centre of legal debate in the Electoral Court, sitting in Johannesburg, on Monday. Advocate Dali Mpofu, arguing for the uMkhonto we Sizwe Party , told the court that the Independent Electoral Commission erred in barring Zuma from contesting elections as a candidate for MKP and, further, acted with bias in making that decision.
He said the IEC did not have the power to invoke Section 47 of the Constitution, which disqualifies a party candidate who was sentenced to more than 12 months in prison without the option of a fine from contesting elections.
