The Terrell Wells swimming pool, shown here in 1919, was a hot spot for San Antonio youth for nearly four decades. The private pool was the scene of summer fun as well as personal tragedies and civil rights challenges.Almost 30 years ago, a reader who had come back to San Antonio to retire after spending decades away, wrote to the beta version of this column to ask the name of a “healthy pool” on the South Side he remembered from growing up here.
As announced in the San Antonio Light, Dec. 19, 1915, the Terrell Wells Baths boasted water from a hot-sulfur spring that was credited with “some of the most marvelous cures recorded at any resorts of the United States.” A sloping, sand beach provided the illusion of a natural setting. The modern version of the pool, a combination water park/teen hangout, came to be after a 1928 remodeling of the pool that was ballyhooed in the Light, May 5, 1928, as the “new Terrell Wells and the new and greater San Jose Beach.”
