Regional families say they fear for their children's lives as they struggle to access effective, life-saving eating disorder services closer to home.
They co-founded the North East Eating Disorder Support Group following their own isolating battles.They shared their own stories at an eating disorder forum in Wodonga last year, and while another is scheduled in the region today, August 1, the pair said nothing had changed.
Cost of living sees diminishing careThere are often up to 70 people on her books each year.But she believed that figure failed to reflect the actual needs of the region, and was worried that too much demand was placed on private practice, particularly as inflation rose. "So even if people come in with a referral, their perhaps evidence-based treatment might be weekly or fortnightly.She said a specialist eating disorder support service offering all levels of care was desperately needed on the border.She also highlighted concerns that the Medicare system was not fair for regional people with eating disorders who had limited access to help, as a non-clinical psychologist rebate was smaller than for clinical psychologists.
Indi MP Helen Haines said it was unacceptable that many eating disorder support services relied on grants to operate.
