Lawrence J. Leigh: Republican politicians conduct business as usual while the republic disintegrates.
A screenshot from a Club for Growth ad where former Utah Gov. John Huntsman Jr. endorses Utah U.S. Senator Mike Lee for reelection in the 2022 midterm elections. The ad first aired on YouTube on Oct. 26, 2022.seven weeks in an England mercifully devoid of American political commercials, I clicked on my TV remote and up popped former Gov. John Huntsman touting Sen. Mike Lee as a man of “unshakeable integrity.” If you watched television, you couldn’t miss it.
As a Senate leader, Lee is a zero. Who are his followers? As a defender of the Constitution, Lee is missing in action on the most important issue in this election. Donald Trump’s ongoing assault on free and fair elections, the cornerstone of constitutional government, is taking place on Lee’s watch. Yet, we have heard scarcely a peep from the senator.
The short answer to my eight-part question is: Lee was absent without leave at every step along the way. The long answer to my question is: For the most part, Lee stood quietly by while Trump’s unprecedented misconduct took place. If Lee spoke out forcefully against Trump because of any of Trump’s above-mentioned election denier acts, I cannot find a record of it.
I can’t think of anything more fundamental to constitutional government than our free and fair election system. One would expect that on such an important issue, Lee would devote as much time and lungpower to condemning Trump’s chicanery as he does to opposing rises in the government’s debt limits. Sadly, that has not been the case. So much for Lee’s “principled leadership and fidelity to the Constitution.
