Comets are made of rock and ice, earning them the nickname dirty snowballs, and when they get closest to the sun a lot of that ice turns to a charged gas called a plasma – creating the comet’s tail. There was uncertainty around whether the comet would survive its brush with the sun, as it passed within 33 million kilometres of the surface of the star.at the University of Warwick, UK, and instead can totally evaporate. Luckily, comet Nishimura escaped this fate.

If you are in the northern hemisphere and want to see this for yourself, it will be close to the horizon just after sunset for the next few days. Look to the western horizon as soon as the sun sets and you will see Mars – Nishimura will be just to the right of the planet.
