This SEMA 2022 build shows how much fun the GR86 can be on a modest budget.
started in Japan in the 1980s, but it didn't really gain a presence in the states until the early 2000s. Once the fire was lit, it exploded in popularity and became one of the fastest growing motorsports in history. Enthusiasts all over the country were looking for rear-wheel-drive cars that they could turn into their own personal pet drift projects. Unfortunately, it's not a cheap sport.
Chen is a fixture at Formula Drift events as the series' official photographer, but Chen is also a drifting enthusiast himself. He's also no stranger to attention-grabbing SEMA builds. Chen into a"daily drifter." Essentially, Chen wants to demonstrate that a fun drift car can be built with a modest budget. Additionally, Chen wants the GR86 to be a car that"you can drive to the track and drive home." Not counting the MSRP of the vehicle, Chen was aiming for a build budget of approximately $10,000.
For increased stopping power, a StopTech Big Brake kit replaces the stock units in the front but Chen's GR86 maintains the factory rear brakes. Suspension on any track car, be it drift or not, is important. For this build Chen equipped the Toyota with a set of ST Suspensions ST XTA Plus 3 coilovers, adjustable control arms and adjustable sway bar links from SPL parts, and finished off with a Toyota GR strut tower brace.
