On balance, Texans offensive lineman is having one of his best seasons but there's more...

Houston Texans offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil ties his shoes as he gets ready to warm up before an NFL football game against the Indianapolis Colts Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, in Houston. The victims of the Uvalde mass shooting will be honored before the game.Tunsil’s personality is a cocktail of his curiosities. The base spirit originates in New Orleans.

“I love female artists because I feel like they’re singing to me. You know what I mean?” Tunsil says. “I feel like they’re singing to me in a way, and it’s just the way it makes me feel.” Money won’t be an issue for Tunsil, a smooth operator who in 2020 negotiated his own three-year, $66 million contract extension without an agent. Tunsil secured $57.85 million of the deal in guaranteed money from a Bill O’Brien/Jack Easterby-led front office that obtained Tunsil in a package deal by trading two first-round picks, a second-round selection and two players to the Dolphins in 2019.

Tunsil, who spent 12 games on the injured reserve last season under one-and-done coach David Culley with a torn thumb ligament, attended all mandatory offseason activities following Smith’s February promotion. Tunsil arrived at training camp saying “we’re going to follow ” and “his direction as he leads,” then followed through by fielding the best football he’s played since arriving in Houston.

There’s perhaps no better mentor pairing for No. 15 overall pick Kenyon Green, who says Tunsil is “like a big brother to me.” As a left guard, Green spends every play and every huddle next to Tunsil, who talks to the rookie throughout the game. Green missed all but one preseason game after suffering a concussion early in training camp, and his progress has been gradual as he’s surrendered the second-most pressures among NFL guards in eight starts.
