Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told my Times colleagues that 'this race is too far along' and that Butler probably wouldn't run. “I do think she’ll do a very good job filling the shoes of a trailblazer,” he said. Indeed, Butler is the first openly gay person of color to serve in the Senate.
