NEW ORLEANS — There is always a white-hot spotlight on the Lakers. At the moment, they’re feeling even more heat than usual.
A close game they led most of the way got away from them, largely because of defensive shortcomings. LeBron James looked mortal on offense, and subpar on defense. Anthony Davis evaporated from the fourth-quarter offense, an old issue rearing its ugly head. That inability to seize a commanding lead came back to bite them at the end of the third quarter: C.J. McCollum pounced as Westbrook glanced away for a moment, driving in for a layup to cut the lead to six. Wenyan Gabriel then tossed a careless inbounds pass that McCollum deflected into the hands of Jose Alvarado, who nailed a 3-pointer to end the first quarter.
