A visit to a wave-battered section of Lake Erie shoreline showed who's winning the battle of the waves.
Michael Dever, director of the county’s Department of Public Works, said the county has letters of interest from the 13 homeowner’s associations and is in discussions with neighboring property owners.underway in the City of Euclid, at the far northeastern corner of Cuyahoga County. Euclid has raised $12.3 million to build a lakefront trail on easements granted by property owners extending ¾ of a mile east from Sims Park to East 250th Street.
The risk is that Lake Erie is steadily chomping at the cliff face behind the towers, where parking lots, swimming pools, and air-conditioning equipment lie closer to the edge. Cuyahoga County has this project on its front-burner now as part of a larger plan to improve lakefront access and overlooks.The county’s projects are evolving alongside many other efforts aimed at opening up the lakefront and improving access to the Cuyahoga River. They include the city’s exploration of a “land bridge’' walkway from downtown to North Coast Harbor.
There was no question down at the water’s edge over who is winning the battle with the waves: It’s not property owners or the City of Lakewood. Over many decades, property owners along the lakeshore, including the Gold Coast, have tried to fight the waves by dumping stone and concrete at the waterline. Some of the dumping has been permitted by local government agencies, and some has not.
