The Laguna Chess Team, bannered by International Master Angelo Abundo Young, Calamba champion Richie Jocson and former Laguna College of Business and Arts stalwart Spencer Real, leads the cast of early entries in the 1st South Luzon Chess Team Tournament slated on October 22, 2023 at Waltermart in Balibago, Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.
'We hope to do well in this event,' said Young, an 8-time chess champion in Illinois, USA.Young is fresh from winning the Grandparents Day Celebration Open Rapid Chess Tournament held on September 9, in Cubao, Quezon City.The other title favorites in this rapid chess tournament are the Philippine Army-Cabuyao City team of National Master Vince Angelo Medina, Kevin Arquero and Paul Sanchez; the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers team of Engr. Julian Paul Querubin, Engr.
Also joining are the Mapua Malayan Colleges of Laguna headed by Cabuyao's top juniors player Rey Julius Taguba, Vincent Avisa and Mark Justine Britanico; and the Marinduque Chess Team of Richard Pelaez, Aldrin Nazareno and Ronelo Lagra. More than 50 teams from the National Capital Region, Central Luzon and Southern Luzon are expected to join.
