The Lagos government has announced the renovation of Ndubuisi Kanu Park, a recreational spot at the heart of Ikeja.

The park was established on June 12, 2014 by Babatunde Fashola, a former governor of Lagos. It was named after Ndubuisi Godwin Kanu, a former military administrator of the state from 1977 to 1978.“The walls are crying for fresh daubs of paint, the waste bins are hollow underneath, the wifi does not work, and the greenery resides in the imaginations of those who visited the park in its early days,” a part of the report reads.

In a statement on Sunday, the Lagos State Parks and Garden Agency said the rehabilitation will commence on July 22. Adetoun Popoola, general manager of LASPARK, said the facelift is expected to be completed in October 2024.“During the period of partial closure, individuals and small groups of up to 10 people will have FREE access to the park, with a maximum occupancy of 500 people,” the statement reads.

“Large gatherings and events will unfortunately not be held at the park till it is reopened after the renovation which commences Monday, July 22nd 2024. “The General Manager, therefore, urged park users to visit other parks such as the JJT Park Alausa and Dr. Abayomi Finnih Park, Oregun, among others, during the renovation period.“While maintaining that LASPARK remains committed to providing functional public recreational spaces in Lagos State and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of park users and the general public during the partial closure, Popoola stated that additional updates will be provided as the project progresses.
