Labor has fired back at Elon Musk and his company X's refusal to comply with the Australian eSafety Commissioner's"demand" to remove violent content of the recent stabbing attack in a Sydney church.Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt has fired back at"narcissistic billionaires" like Elon Musk after the X owner branded the eSafety Commissioner as the"Australian censorship commissar".
“He doesn’t seem to owe any obligation to any member of the public, and quite frankly I think the public has had a gutful of these narcissistic billionaires that think they are above the law,” Mr Watt told Sky News Australia Political Editor Andrew Clennell. It comes as the Labor government has moved to propose new laws to combat online “misinformation” while granting the Australian Communications and Media Authority with new powers to fine social media giants millions of dollars for content seen to be “harmful”.
“I certainly hope the events of the last week, including the proliferation of misinformation on social media has really given everyone pause for thought about why we need stronger laws," Mr Watt said. The Agriculture Minister was then pressed on whether he understood the potential unintended consequences around the freedom of expression which could be impacted by the misinformation bill.
