The Albanese government has committed $765 million to create a new air defence system, acting on a key recommendation from the Defence Strategic Review.
United States military manufacturing giant Lockheed Martin will partner with the Australian Defence Force to build the Joint Air Battle Management System in the second part of what the government expects to be a"multibillion dollar program."
Such is the level of complexity involved, some have raised questions about whether it can function effectively given the challenge of successfully integrating different systems from different manufacturers on such a large scale. However, the government appears to have put those concerns to one side as it announced the new phase of development.
Defence Minister Richard Marles said the government was"working at pace" to modernise Australia's defence forces as they looked to implement the findings of the DSR. Those roles would come across software development, systems engineering, project management and logistics, the government said, with the majority centred in South Australia.
