Cubs manager David Ross announced Kyle Hendricks will start on Opening Day against the Brewers and reigning NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes.
Hendricks, the team’s incumbent ace, and Stroman, a key offseason signing, were the most obvious candidates to start on Opening Day. They're the furthest along in their build-ups among Cubs starters following MLB's lockout.this spring, though he and Stroman endorsed one another to make the start in recent weeks.
“[Hendricks’] résumé speaks for itself,” Stroman told reporters in Arizona last week. “He’s the guy who should be handed the ball each and every Opening Day as long as he’s here.” Said Hendricks of Stroman: “I told him he deserves it. After the season he had last year, it’s, ‘What have you done for me lately?’”
It will be Hendricks’ third straight Opening Day start, following a complete game shutout in the shortened 2020 season and a three-inning outing last year. He's been the Opening Day starter each year of Ross' Cubs managerial tenure.Since 1901, 13 Cubs pitchers have made three or more consecutive Opening Day starts, including three pitchers since 2000.
