Kuwaiti authorities said on June 13 three people had been detained for suspected manslaughter over a building fire that killed 50 foreign workers, mostly Indians, and plunged relatives and friends into mourning.British Christians face rising levels of discrimination
The fire broke out around dawn on June 12 at the base of the block housing nearly 200 workers in the Mangaf area, which is heavily populated with migrant laborers. Many of the dead and injured suffocated from smoke inhalation after being trapped in the building by the fire, according to a source in the fire department.
On June 12, Interior Minister Sheikh Fahd Al-Yousef vowed to address"labor overcrowding and neglect," and threatened to close any buildings that flout safety rules. "I'm still not able to come to terms with it. We didn't believe the news when we heard about it," said Varghese.On June 12, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised help for those affected by the"gruesome fire tragedy," announcing 200,000-rupee payments to next of kin.
