Violinist David Harrington formed Kronos in 1973 to make a noise like Jimi Hendrix, and on the eve of an Australian tour he’s still shaking up the classical music establishment.

If the words “string quartet” conjure for you genteel soundtracks to wedding receptions or garden parties, then you’ve never heard Kronos Quartet.

Kronos Quartet : David Harrington, violin; John Sherba, violin; Hank Dutt, viola; Paul Wiancko, cello.for the fifth time this March, it will still be pushing the boundaries of what a string quartet can be, even though three of its members – Harrington on violin, John Sherba on violin and Hank Dutt on viola – have been constant since 1978.

“Mahsa has been so generous in sharing with us the reality behind her work, so we know it reflects the situation that’s going on in Iran right now and has been going on for a long time,” says Harrington., a rousing plea for Persians to unite by the late composer Parviz Meshkatian. Eclecticism has always been a watchword for Kronos – it was covering songs by Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan in the 1970s, when almost no classically trained musicians were taking rock seriously – and its Adelaide Festival program will be no exception.
